NewDawnBrothers Volunteers in The Butter Fly Project Week 2

Hola we back, sorry for the break in transmission, we have been gathering top notch contents that will keep you super-duper exciting and active during your stay at Newton Paul’s Blog.
So what have you missed, last week Friday NewDawnBrothers revisited LEA Primary School for the continuation of the on-going project “The Butterfly Project”. Last two weeks, we introduced the topic “Global Warming” which got the kids pretty interested alongside causing them to participate dramatically and intellectually.
This time, they were lectured on the Effect of Global warming, how we humans contribute to global warming and notable solutions that can reduce global warming.

 EFFECTS
Global warming could melt the ice at the poles thereby raising the level of the oceans. Water would then cover all the flat coastal lands and cause heavy devastating floods in the process causing some animals and even humans to be homeless and in some cases lead to loss of lives. For example
  • In July 2012, flooding in Ibadan, Oyo state capital caused people to flee their homes
  •  In Jos, Heavy rainfall caused the Lamido Dam to overflow destroying 200 homes. Europe experienced such an extreme spell of hot weather that more than 20,000 people died as a direct result of the heat.
  •  In July 2006, severe heat waves in North America contributed to the death of at least 225 people.
How We Humans Contribute To Global Warming?
  • We all love akara (Beans Cake) right?, the firewood the lady burns for that delicious akara actually release heat signatures thereby increase the quantity of Greenhouse gas Methane in the atmosphere.
  • Our sources of transportation are huge consumers of energy and increase the quantity of the Greenhouse gas carbondioxide in the air. This includes Cars, ships and jets (meanwhile everyone wants to have a car in Nigeria, guess years from now our natural cloud will be replaced with carbon and smoke; we should rethink of the damages)
  • We use too much of electricity in our homes, schools and offices. Electricity is used to watch t.v (amazing series, movies, music even video games) charge our phones (to chat, find trouble online, answer calls), laptops and other chores.
  • Generators (I better pass my neighbour) use a lot of energy and release a lot of Carbon dioxide which is a very powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming.
  • By not recycling our plastics, glasses, paper and throwing them into the trash, we increase the green gas methane in the atmosphere which traps a lot of heats. (I’m yet to know what the newly appointed president will do to reduce our carbon footprint especially being the giant of Africa which produce giant carbon footprint)
  • Methane is one of the most powerful greenhouse gases and is 23 times stronger than CO2 in capturing heat. One of the biggest producers of methane is decomposing garbage in landfills (Nigeria environ is a typical example where garbage are poorly contained, gutters are ill constructed and properly structured causing our streets to be littered with dirt, faeces in most cases leading to a forever summer weather). This is one reason why it is important for us to reduce, reuse and recycle whenever possible. The less we have to throw away, the less garbage ends up in landfills. When there is less garbage in landfills, less methane, a greenhouse gas, is produced.
FACT: it’s our own fault the world’s temperature is rising and global warming is happening. Through our actions, we release deadly amounts carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

What are the solutions?
  • Tell people about global warming. Spread the news.
  • We can help reduce the greenhouse gas methane by burning less wood, coal and natural gas and getting more energy from sunlight, wind and nuclear energy. These alternative sources do not burn fuel and put little or no greenhouse gases in the air (this is where government needs to step up, evoke other means rather than hydro)
  • We can help by minimising our use of electricity. Put off the light when you are not using it, change your light bulbs to energy saving bulbs which are cheaper and brighter. Put off the TV when not in use and minimise the way we use TV because it consumes a lot of energy (thanks to prepaid meter)
  • Recycle cans, bottles, plastic bags, and newspapers. Recycling used materials uses less energy than making new ones. Lots of things thrown in the landfills can be reused or recycled (this will create a clean and neat environment free from litters)
  • Finally and extremely important, planting of trees is very important. All growing plants take carbon dioxide out of the air. They turn the carbon part of carbon dioxide into wood then release oxygen. In recent years, people have been cutting down forests all over the world. Scientists say vast new forests must be planted.

CONCLUSION: Our world is in danger and it needs heroes like you and me to save it and the living things that exist on it.

So what happens to action movies where cars explode, guns are fired, protagonist blows a whole oil pipe line (Denzel Washington: The Equalizer)? its not left out, it sure contributes to global warming. But I love action movies, we have to compromise this one hehehe...
