NewDawnBrothers Volunteers in The Butter Fly Project Week 1

Ifeoma teaching Primary One on Global Warming

Over the weekend, Friday 16th 2015 to be precise, NewDawnBrothers volunteered to be part of the #Butterfly Project which is aimed at building the mind of the Nigerian child in order to arm the child with the capacity to contribute to the development of his/her society, proffer solutions to emerging issues now and in the nearest future.

The formative age is the best and most crucial stage through which the minds of the young child can be impacted and built towards achieving its full potentials. The quality of education and knowledge they are exposed to, gives them adequate platform to become better individuals in the society.
The project officially kicked off last week in LEA Primary School Kado, Abuja. The objective of the first teaching was to get the kids understand the “Global Warming and Climate Change Concepts” and to be able to relate the terms learnt to their environment. By the end of the lecture, they should be able to understand the greenhouse effect and explain it to their parents and peers and know exactly the dangers of global warming to their environment and give concrete examples of global warming causes within their environment. The teaching was achieved with the use of the basic teaching technique which has to do with explaining using relative examples, diagrams, drama and singing a song they can relate to (Thanks to Dontel Rajis for the creative technique).

What is it you need to know about Global Warming?
A layer of gases called the atmosphere surrounds Earth. When sunlight reaches our planet, it warms the land and the oceans. Excess heat rises back into the atmosphere. Some of the gases in the atmosphere, known as greenhouse gases, trap heat and act like a giant blanket keeping our planet warm. This is similar to the way an actual greenhouse works, and that’s why it’s called the greenhouse effect. Sunlight passes in through the glass of a greenhouse and warms plants, but the heat is then trapped inside and cannot escape back out.
Some greenhouse gas is good. Without a blanket of these gases, you’d be freezing right now—Earth would be about 60 F colder!  But too much greenhouse gas means a thicker blanket covering the planet, trapping more heat. When the green-house gases in the atmosphere become too much, they absorb too much heat which increases the temperature on earth. The result is what scientists call global warming.
The school officials gave us a warm reception and hope to see us again while the volunteers got warm hugs from the kids as we departed.  Look out for more pictures, information, follow back social media platforms this week as we present you update on the on-going project.

  1. Asking questions are in fact nice thing if you are not understanding anything fully,
except this post presents fastidious understanding yet.
