EPISODE TWO

Collins gets home, his head fussing with thoughts of Susan. He can’t believe she is hooked up; not at this point, not this one that has awaken his interest. Several years have passed and he hasn’t been hooked up after a major heart wrecking crash he had with his ex-Joyce, who is currently a model for playboy. Funny how a light skinned Nigerian made it into an international magazine. She is smoking hot but at the same time, smoking stupid and heartless. Joyce is one selfish daughter of a prolific marketer who swims in billions at the moment. He doesn’t care what his daughter has turned into or where she might be at the moment; all he cares about is his millions. Sometimes he uses her as a bait to get more money; this is how she probably got transferred into playboy’s account. It’s none of Collins business, but it aches his heart anytime he thinks about it.

Collins tries shaking his head off Joyce as she begins to saturate his head, diluting memories of Susan he recorded earlier. “I’m not getting any younger!” he laments.

Days turns to weeks, Collins just finished from his office and decides to shop for some provision and toiletries at Shoprite located in Silverbird Galleria. He gets a trolley and strolls to the provision section. He searches for his favourite milk – Danno, and he notices the shelve is left with one tin.

“Lucky me” he whispers.

As he picks it, the next shelve gets exposed; giving him a free passage to focus on the next aisle. He sees Susan backing his shelve. He quickly turns to leave so she doesn’t spot him. Without focusing on his swift turn, he bumps into a Shoprite worker who happens to be the shelf filler. Several thuds emits from his aisle attracting Susan’s attention. She gets to the scene immediately like a medic personnel.

“Sorry… is everything okay?” she questions the two people on the floor gathering Danno tins of milk which have lost control.

“Oga watch where you dey go nah!” The Shoprite worker announced as he gets up.

“Wait a minute…” She paused, “Mr. Collins, Oh! What a small world” she continues.

“Very small it is… I was blindfolded” he says dusting his trousers. He looks around to ensure no one was staring at him.

Susan laughs in her mind for a while then decides to assist him “Let me help you with that”.
“Oh no I am fine… I should be the one to help you, what are you getting?” he inquires.

“I want to get some frozen turkey and chicken, then spices” she responds.

“Beautiful!!! What’s the celebration?” he asks.

She looks down her feet “Well there is no party, Damilola is not around, he travelled so I decided to come get these stuffs. I want to make soup and stew before he gets back”.

“Oh really… so how did you get here?” he questions.

“I took a drop… that’s a taxi”.

“I know what a drop is madam” he says laughing. “I can drop you off at your house then” he adds.

Susan is stunned with his request; her mind quickly runs through so many things that lead her into declining “No I am perfectly fine… I don’t want to bother you and your busy schedule”.

“No gentleman can be too busy to drive a damsel home” he teases.

They act like they’ve known themselves for a while, accompany each other to get the remaining things on their list then walk to the checkout counter. He orders Susan to put her goods first on the conveying belt so the checkout assistant can cost the goods and after she did, he fixed his own. The cost is Twenty Five Thousand Naira. The assistant admires them when she sees an engagement ring on Susan’s finger.

“Awww… you guys would make a beautiful couple” she interrupts their silence.

Susan and Collins stops and stare at themselves for a while and immediately burst into different defensive words that cannot fix into sentences.  Collins uses the POS machine to foot the bill and shuts the assistant up while Susan leaves the counter in order to avoid further interrogations.

“It’s okay, we get to see many of them come in here, pretending not to be dating. Do have a great day” she announces as Collins walks away leaving a smile of refreshment behind.

Collins drives Susan to her place in his Audi TT; they remain quiet like someone poured cold ice on them. He pulls over at the parking area in the compound, gets out of the car and opens the trunk to pick up the plastic bags stocked with Susan’s cooking stuff. Susan wasn’t looking thrilled despite the stress she has been saved from by her landlord. She tries getting the bags from the hands of Collins but he refuses and signals her to open the door so he can take the items in. He drops them at the kitchen and stares at her while she carries a moody face.

She picks up a chilled drink from the freezer, as she turns to offer him a drink, she notices his absence.

“Collins…” she calls.

“Collins!”  This time frightened. She checks the guest bathroom, rooms and climbs upstairs to confirm her being alone. She scrolls through her phone but realises she doesn’t have his number.

“Oh my God… I should have collected his contact before now; so I’m all alone in this town” she exhales.
