INTERRACIAL MARRIAGE

The neighborhood I grew up during my childhood, made it evident that Nigeria has a solid relationship with Italians. Almost everyone in the street had siblings in Italy lol.

Not only were they having affiliation with the Italians, they were getting married to them as well which made it really weird because of what we heard about the white folks back in the days.

We saw ourselves superior when it comes to cultural practices, morality, keeping a home and not leading the whole family to a divorce wreckage.

However, it’s a misconception that most person think getting married to a totally different race is a bad idea, most times we tend to judge the book by the cover and always feel that only people from your country are only suitable wife/husband material and other are just bunch of lazy, immoral, unrealistic asses.

Frankly speaking, this is not true I believe everyone has an interesting personality due to cultural backgrounds, environment, exposure and all sorts.

“People should first look inside themselves before they look at others and judge them. They should remember that a couple is made up of two people, not two races or cultures” [Watts and Henriksen 1999]

Surprisingly, in this present age the barrier of racial differences has been broken down, thanks to the social media for making the world a realistic global village where connection, interactivity, follow up, monitoring, and communication has spiced up love.

Despite this global village ideology, some people are still on the school of thought {especially Africans} that getting married to a different race may end up in broken homes and broken lives.

Some common reasons why people still practice interracial marriage this day especially in the 21^st century include;

Shared Common Interests:

Most individual  are very keen on getting married to an individual that they share similar interest with regardless of the race they originate from, presently in this age no body want to lag behind but want to move further faster in an enjoyable ride. These sets of people, get there sleeve entangled with a person who has common mindset with them.

Interest could vary from music, movies, sport, fashion, education, family orientation etc.

Attractiveness of the partner:

Ever taken an in-depth look at a white girl before? Her hair, eyebrow, lips, pointed nose, smooth soft skin, curvy hips, then her lovely ascent, my oh my, I can go on and on…

This is very common with the male folks as they are moved by what they see, most men could find a lady from a different race (say Ecuador) very attractive and would want to slay the world to have her.

Socioeconomic factor:

This is one of the most important reasons why people consider getting married to another race. As economic challenges strangle people, they look for greener pasture and better opportunity to live comfortably.

On another account, some of these marriages are simply on contract anyway to get citizenship papers and the tendency that contract may elongate to a real thing is very slim.

Who doesn’t want their child to be a British or United state citizen? Sometimes, one might get genuine people who are actually in love with each other; this makes it easier and safer.
