Lessons from Spartacus

On seeing this title, I know your mind carved an amphitheatre covered in blood, unveiling a gladiator putting on a metal drape, holding a trident and badass shield as he stands above a defeated foe while the naked crowd meltdown judgment “kill him, kill him”

Well in this article, let’s focus on the subject of the title “Lessons”, not the gore, nudity and sex known in the series.

As a matter of fact, I found elements of education and satisfaction in the mind-blowing series Spartacus which I am about sharing with you.

Spartacus was from Thrace who served as an auxiliary in the Roman army before sold into slavery where he found himself among other slaves and gladiators in the house of Lentulus Batiatus.

I) Humility:

Initially, Spartacus, as portrayed in the movie, was a very proud individual who thought himself as a leader, could defeat whoever whenever until he met Crixus who humiliated him into humility. He suddenly figured out he was nothing and wouldn’t be anything if he doesn’t let go of what he thought he had or known.

When we come into a new place of work, we sometimes wanna act badass, like we know it all may be due to experiences from our previous place of work or from life generally. This, on the other hand, can put people off and just make us an enemy of the organization.

Why don't we stay calm to observe and learn the system then gradually input your vibes by gently showing them you got some hot sauce in you? That would be better than taking a giant step which may lead to a gigantic fall just like Spartacus in the beginning of the series. (We don’t really get dual chances sometimes, so utilize your first chance with caution)

II) Set up a TEAM:

Take a look at Gannicus, Oenamus, Crixus, Agron, Nasir in the entire series, they were loyal men who made sure objectives were executed.

These days, you really don’t need an entire army to slay anything, neither do you need 4million likes/followers on your social media account before you sell a product or cause a change in a sector.

All you need is identify few people who see things from your perspective and are willing to join your voyage.

III) Beware of Crixus:

In your team, there is likely to be just one person who isn’t seeing things from the same perspective as you. Sometimes, it could be a good thing, on the other hand, it can be highly dangerous and expensive to recover from certain errors.

Imagine if Crixus hadn’t broken off with (in the real story about 30,000 men from the initial 90,000slave army) for selfish reasons and got 80% slaughtered, Spartacus would have indeed won the war.

That particular teammate that likes argument and want things done his own way when the pointers are going the other way…hmmm humbly tell him/her to excuse you guys.

IV) Tenacity:

This is the part that got me super glued to the life of Spartacus. His persistence was immeasurable. Are you the type that easily gives up when fury challenges arrive?

C’mon there was no way he would have died a free man if he wasn’t tenacious. He saw beyond the chains and shackles, he knew there is a life more than glorified bondage.

They say no one from your hometown has ever built a duplex, or people from your house can never amount to something good or No Nigerian has ever stepped into space talk more of plugging our flag on the moon?

What do you see for yourself?

V) Build your muscles:

The sweetest thing about this character is that he refused to remain his former self. He trained harder than any other gladiator. Came up with skills no man has ever known. He was indeed possessed by the gods and fought with shocking combat that vibrated the balls of Rome.

Everyone was indeed scared of the name “Spartacus” cos they know the disastrous plague that follows him.

How well have you developed your talent, skills, and abilities? It’s not just saying you can do this or that? Is there a unique touch you get to add at the end to make yours stand out from the others? Or do you cream your personality with a peculiar attitude that will make people go wowwwwww?

VI) Beware of green snake friendship:

Lucretia and Llithyia friendship is one I call “Green snake friendship”. Have you ever come across that one-sided gratification seeking individual who comes out with plots and schemes disguised to help you but is in proper favour to pilot him/her above you? (House of cards viewers can I get an “Aye”)

Such friendships are usually hard to identify but a careful evaluation and analysis will help you track the green snake in the green grass.

The earlier you let go of them, the earlier you save your child from falling down a cliff with it.

VII) Kill them all:

As we live and breathe, there are an immeasurable amount of people who aren’t pleased with our existence. As a matter of fact, they literally act as opposition in one way or the other.

Either they withhold information from you or they give you wrong information or they just stir others to hate you and treat you bad.

Whichever way they may come, stand firm, continue building yourself, your skills someday you will prove them all wrong by killing their limited thinking about you.

Your success is the best way to get back at them, not your tears or fears.

Wrap up

When you become successful, don’t pay people with evil, rather with good cos that’s the peak of maturity.

Spartacus never intended taking over Rome, his intention was to take his followers to a safe Haven free from Roman lashes.

Till date, he will forever be remembered for liberating those who are oppressed and treated badly.

In the midst of blood and sand, lies a truth that I will forever tell.
