Self Defence Workshop in Graceville Christian Centre (Seeds Team)

When was the last time you watched a Kungfu or Karate movie? I’m sure while glued to the chair; you began wishing you could do one or two moves?

I keep wondering the impossible nature of exceptional stunts but later figured out the fictions are not far from non-fictions through my impeccable experience I’m about to share with you.

Graceville Christian Centre’s Seed Team on 19th, March 2017, hosted a brief martial art section with Sensei George to teach the teens self-defence using martial art.

Our beloved Senior Pastor, Pastor Tunde Ayeni believes in building well rounded teenagers who are well molded in their spirit, soul and body to live a productive Christian life.

The society as we know is getting dangerous daily, kids get bullied at school, in the neighbourhood, older folks molest children through all manner of skilful act leading to great depression amongst teens.

Sensei George firstly introduced the teens to what Self-defence is all about. He emphasised that you have to protect yourself by respecting yourself, being kind, gentle, well behaved and most especially listening attentively to instructions.

He cautioned his class that martial art isn’t meant for everyone to learn because some children's bad behaviour accompanied with this new skill will make them a lion with a horn, therefore, no one is expected to use self-defence against any other person.

He encouraged the teens that no matter what they should look for a way to prevent having issues that will get them into a fight. Leaving the area and apologising is the first way of defending yourself.

He created a life scenario about walking on the street and a potential attacker is tailing you. Because one's reaction determines either the attacker proceeds or evades, he ordered that you should turn immediately and ask “What!!!” The element of surprise will make the attacker flee or do something else.

What if the person doesn’t leave? The next step is creating a safety zone.

Self-defence is all about confidence, you need to build your capacity to handle things and think swiftly.

He taught the teens;
I) How to unlock a fist grip when held with one hand and both hands
II) How to block a punch from hitting the belly
III) How to avoid being  by an opponent from behind and how to unlock the choke with a slam. (I got the surprise of my life in two occasions cos I was the mannequin)

Practise makes perfect

Among the beautiful lessons learnt today is the importance of martial art which is;
1) Connect the mind and body
II) Gain self confidence and respect
III) Focus and stillness
IV) Enhances conflict resolution skills
V) Weight loss
VI) Improved reflexes
VII) Better mood etc.

Martial art can’t be over emphasise. SEED TEAM facilitators had an awesome time learning these mind blowing fascinating security tips and tricks. I can boldly walk anywhere without being afraid of getting gripped, choked or even held by my trouser like the way a typical hungry Nigerian Police man would do…. Kiaaaai!!!

Now to explain why martial art student shout “Kiai” like they all drive KIA car lol, its cos “Kiai” is a Japanese expression of inner energy.

Wrap up
Years before now we knew nothing about self-defence because we felt we were defended. We’ve seen how security has been breached lately; it’s advisable that we register our kids in Self-defence courses. As a parent, you can download Krav Maga videos from YouTube so you practice with your kids.

Build your own codes, signs, run drills in your house during the weekend if needed so that at the end you all can relatively work like an ecosystem.

Our  honourable Head of Team (HOT) Mrs Clementine Usman-Wamba is pleased for the turn up of event, her special thanks to our Senior Pastor, Pastor Tunde Ayeni, her dependable Assistant Mrs Olanike Ogosi, and the other reliable facilitators including myself. Thanks to Hephzibah Ubong for bringing Sensei George all the way from Japan lol,
