We all want love in our lives. Relationships make us feel valued and good about ourselves. Being in love is one of the best feelings we have as human beings. 

In fact, hormonally, our brains produce something called oxytocin after we make love to our partners. It’s a euphoric feeling that cannot be replicated. So, once you’ve found that special person who makes you feel good about you, you don’t want to let them go, right? Wrong!

Wait, what? I know, you must be thinking that sounds ridiculous. But, the truth of the matter is that after the honeymoon phase your relationship is going to change. You’ll get used to smelling your partner’s morning breath, however unpleasant that is, and things will get routine. 

People get comfortable with one another and they change the way they relate. One way to avoid this from happening is to have time apart from each other. Do things with your girlfriends so that you show your partner that you have a life outside of them.

 Even if you have the healthiest independent relationship, there is a chance that you’ll get bored. It’s happened to me, so I am speaking from personal experience. What happens when you get bored in a relationship isn’t the best thing: you might cheat on your partner. You may be thinking: “I would never do that. I am loyal to my partner; we even go to couple’s therapy to work on our relationship.

It has nothing to do with your character and loyalty; people cheat for many different reasons. But one of the most common reasons that people seek out other romantic interests is that they are unsatisfied in their relationship. It doesn’t mean that they don’t care about their partner; in fact they care a lot. This could be for many reasons. 

Maybe it’s because they’re not having sex with their partner often enough. They don’t feel desired or wanted and so they start to crave that attention and physical affection. Once a person feels unsatisfied sexually, they will start to become frustrated and could look to other people for this need to be fulfilled.

Another reason people cheat is that they don’t feel their emotional needs are being met. If you believe like your partner doesn’t understand who you are, you’re bound to start feeling lonely and misunderstood. This isn’t a good feeling and it’s something that leads people to search for other sources of emotional validation.

This is where it gets tricky, is it cheating if there’s no physical touch involved? The answer is: yes.

If you are sexually or romantically attracted to another person besides your partner, and you are receiving emotional attention from that person, this is considered “an emotional affair.” 

Your partner is emotionally unavailable so you’ve turned to another source to get the love that you can’t get from that person. People have emotional affairs with people they’ve met in person or even online. There are so many ways to get that sort of affection from other people that they’re not receiving in their relationship.

To be clear, just because you haven’t gotten physically intimate with someone, does not mean you aren’t cheating. Emotional affairs count as cheating or being unfaithful.

In an ideal world, people would be honest with each other about what was going on in their relationships. They would seek out solutions to their relationship problems rather than diverting from them. But, it’s scary to confront the fact that your relationship isn’t working. Rather than make the hard decision to leave the relationship when it’s time to end it, they stay in an unhealthy situation, out of fear, and cheat on their partner instead.

If you’re thinking about cheating on your partner, ask yourself: do you want to be in this relationship or not? If not, it’s time to be brave, sit down with that person and tell them how you’re feeling. It’s not easy to confront these feelings, but when you do it, you’ll have a better chance of finding happiness.
